Many everyday drinks are acidic, including soft drinks, sports and energy drinks, fruit juices, citrus-flavoured water, and some sparkling beverages. Frequent exposure to these drinks can gradually demineralize the surface of the teeth and contribute to enamel erosion. You do not necessarily need to avoid every acidic beverage, but changing how and when you drink them may help reduce prolonged contact with your teeth.
Limit Frequent Sipping
How often your teeth are exposed to acid can matter. Slowly sipping an acidic drink over several hours repeatedly exposes the enamel instead of limiting that exposure to a shorter period. When you choose one of these beverages, consider having it in one sitting or alongside a meal rather than carrying it throughout the day. Water remains a practical option between meals because it does not add dietary acids or sugars.
Use a Straw and Follow With Water
Using a reusable straw may reduce how much an acidic drink contacts the front surfaces of your teeth. Position the straw toward the back of the mouth and avoid swishing or holding the beverage around your teeth. Afterward, rinsing or drinking plain water can help clear away some remaining residue and neutralize leftover acid in the mouth.

Give Your Enamel Time Before Brushing
It may seem helpful to brush immediately after an acidic drink, but the tooth surface can be temporarily softened following acid exposure. The Canadian Dental Association recommends waiting approximately 30 minutes after eating before brushing to avoid damaging enamel. In the meantime, rinse with water. When you do brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps strengthen enamel and supports the replacement of minerals lost during early demineralization.
Watch for Possible Changes
Enamel erosion may contribute to sensitivity, changes in tooth shape, or a more yellow appearance as the underlying tooth layer becomes more visible. These changes can also have other causes, so they should not be diagnosed based on appearance or sensitivity alone.
